Steady Help During All Seasons

Friday September 19, 2014

The seasons are changing.  In just a couple of days we will officially move from summer to autumn.  The sun and moon share the day in more equal amounts after long sunny summer evenings.  We’ve been considering the moon these days and what it has to show us about God’s character and God’s involvement in our lives.

Some of my favorite words in the Bible related to the moon and God’s care are in the poem we know as Psalm 121

I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber;  indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.  The Lord watches over you— the Lord is your shade at your right hand;  the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;  the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.  (Psalm 121 NIV)

In ancient times people thought a lot about a “higher power” as they looked at the circumstances around them that were out of their control.  For example, the forces of nature were unpredictable and had powerful effects on their everyday life that depended on good weather for harvest.   Some of them looked to the moon and worshipped the moon god, hoping that help would come from the moon to ward off troubles.

I’m so grateful today to know that my help comes from God who made the moon.  I’m grateful that I don’t have to look to the moon for help.  For one thing, it’s a tiny speck in the sky in comparison to the sun or the immensity of the galaxies.  What hope of sufficient strength and help could I find from the tiny moon which is visible from earth.  I’m grateful that I can look beyond the moon to the creator who holds the entire universe in His hands and tells you and me today – I care about you.

Whether it is every day circumstances or even things beyond my control, I can look to God for help.  In the night when I wake up and thoughts are going around in my head, I can trust that God is caring for the things that concern me.  He’s not asleep on the job.  He’s actively watching over me.

Today I want to put myself into God’s care and rely on His strength and love.  Whatever I face I want to remember that God has the power and wisdom to show me the way.  In whatever ways my world is being pulled this way or that, I want to trust that God will keep me steady.  When each of us lay our head on our pillow tonight, let’s remember that we can have peace because, while we sleep, God will take care of us.
