An attitude of humility allows us to accept our dependence on God and encouragement from one another. Humility helps us to stop and listen to God's warning signals when we are treading a familiar path that may be harmful.
Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. (Proverbs 1:7 NLT)

Humility helps us deal with each day, one day at a time. We admit that we don't know all that we need to know. Humility helps us follow an unknown path with our hand in the hand of God. Specifically when we are new to recovery and relearning a healthy way of life, this unknown path with God is much safer than any path we've ever known. Even though we feel vulnerable because we are walking in an unknown way, we learn to trust the loving hand of God to support and guide us each step of the way. We turn our attention from the sounds in our head that want us to take the old familiar way that leads to destruction and we choose to fill our minds with God's word.

When we walk in humility, we regularly ask God for wisdom. We seek wisdom from others who have been on this journey for a while. Especially when we hear challenges to what we think is appropriate, humility says, "I will step away from my own way of thinking, believing, and behaving and seek a healthy way. I'll do it God's way this time." As we walk this humble path of embracing God's way, we find it ultimately produces fullness of life for us.
My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. (Proverbs 4:20-23 NLT)
