When God wanted to give people a very simple summary of how life was meant to be lived he said this: O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8 NLT) As we come into recovery from a destructive, self-centered life, it’s good to think about what makes life work. From this simple summary from God's word, we can see that humility is something important.

What does humility look like and how does a person live a healthy humble life?
In recovery, humility has to do with allowing God to show us life as God sees it and surrendering to that new vision. A humble person doesn’t think too much or too little of themselves. They, frankly, are busy loving God and being involved in loving relationships to spend a whole lot of time worrying about people’s opinions of them. If we can imagine a self-centered person, a humble person would be the healthy opposite. Instead of obsessing on what's happening in them or around them, they are focused on God's goodness and how much better life is with God than life without God. Instead of always thinking about what they want or what they need, they focus on serving others and making a meaningful contribution to life in their family and their community. Instead of always dealing with their own pain, they live in God's comfort and seek with kindness to comfort and encourage others. Instead of obsessing on a mistake, they admit the problem, learn the lesson and move on, praising God that they are stronger for having gone through the experience.

The Lord is good and does what is right; he shows the proper path to those who go astray. He leads the humble in doing right, teaching them his way. The humble will see their God at work and be glad. Let all who seek God’s help be encouraged. (Psalm 25:8-9, 69:32 NLT)
God's way of living right, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God is so freeing. Let's enter into that freedom today.
