December 1, 2014 God Is Listening

Monday December 1, 2014

Trust God from the bottom of your heart; don’t try to figure out everything on your own. Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; he’s the one who will keep you on track.  (Proverbs 3:5-6 MSG)

How are we expected to know what is right? How do we know what is wrong? What is helpful? What is harmful? How can we be sure that we are making the right choices? God knew we would need help in this area and, through the scriptures recorded in the Bible, gave us moral laws that instruct us in a deeply satisfying way of life.  God has a plan for each person’s life and has provided the wisdom to proceed well through each step of our journey.

One of the practices we are encouraged to maintain in recovery is taking daily inventory with God.  This practice is intended for us to reflect on the happenings that took place that day.  We inventory what we have done right.  We inventory what we have done wrong.  We also look at those events which we know have the potential to draw us back into the darkness, resentment and shame that we have been journeying away from.  The purpose of daily inventory is to keep us on the right road to recovery and restrict any bitterness from taking root in our hearts.

See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.  (Hebrews 12:15 NIV)

At the end of this day, as we take inventory, let’s listen for God’s voice.  Let’s ask Him to help us accept the things we cannot change, for the courage to change the things we can, and for the wisdom to know the difference.
