Telling Others

The Bible is full of stories which show the power of God to overcome the hurts of the past.  We hear of Abraham telling lies about His wife in order to save his own skin.  We learn of Jacob’s scheming and stealing his brother’s birthright.  King David’s adultery with Bathsheba is not hidden.  God does not hide the fact that those He loves fail at times.  Each of these Bible patriarchs were restored to their relationship with God.  God did not stop loving them when they failed to walk in His ways and He does not stop loving us.

How priceless is your unfailing love, O God!  People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.  (Psalm 36:7 NIV)

Some of us have had experience working the Twelve Steps and are now at a point where we can carry the message to others.  We know and are able to recognize the warning signs of self-pity and addictive compulsive tendencies in ourselves and in those around us. As we recognize the signs of potential relapse in others we may need to delicately challenge them by sharing something which helped us and may encourage them to get help.  We need to be willing to be unpopular “in the moment” in order to speak the truth.  However, we need to also remember that, when touching on such deep and sensitive issues, it’s important to speak in the language of love, not condemnation.

Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. (Galatians 6:1 NLT)

The Bible tells us that Jesus was full of grace and truth.  Today, as we have opportunity to share with others, let’s grace them as we have been graced and then share the truth that will encourage them back onto the path of righteousness.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.  (John 1:14 NIV)
