Antidote To False Guilt

Thursday January 22, 2015

When we've done wrong it's always best to admit it as quickly as possible, confess our wrong doing to God, receive His forgiveness, take responsibility for any consequences, and move on.

When we've done that to the best of our ability, why do we sometimes continue to experience nagging guilt?  At this point we need to look beyond ourselves and recognize that the devil loves to accuse and condemn us and fill our thoughts with lies.

For the accuser of our brothers and sisters has been thrown down to earth—the one who accuses them before our God day and night.  (Revelation 12:10 NLT)

The good news is that we can immediately send those thoughts away because condemnation is never from God.

So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.  (Romans 8:1 NLT)

Of course God wants us to recognize when we go wrong but His voice of correction is very different from those accusations resulting in negativity and despair.

For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience leads us away from sin and results in salvation. There’s no regret for that kind of sorrow. But worldly sorrow, which lacks repentance, results in spiritual death. (2 Corinthians 7:10 NLT)

What's the antidote to these thoughts of accusation and condemnation?
1.  Change our thinking so it matches God’s word.
2.  Remember God is in control and is working all things for good for everyone involved
3.  Humbly accept that we don’t know all that is going on and leave our concerns in God’s hands
4.  Intentionally receive healing and comfort for the wounds we caused ourselves when we injured others
5.  Respect the choices of others to either get on with their life and healing or not – God is offering the same healing to    them today that He’s offering us
