Power To Choose (2)

Tuesday April 7, 2015

In every circumstance, God gives us the power of the Holy Spirit to make the right choice.  Our part is to obey God and make the choice to do what is right.  God will never decide for us, He leaves that choice to us.  How will I know if I am making the right choice?  God gives us very clear principles and directions which help us know if we are straying from the path.
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21 NLT)

We can clearly see how our lives in addiction were not lives controlled by God’s Spirit and therefore were lives filled with harmful choices.  We have also become aware that our lives still need to be transformed through the ongoing surrender to God’s direction through His word.  God makes changes in us, but it is us who must surrender our passions and sinful desires, one decision at a time.  We have to say "No" to things we thought we “had to have,” no matter what.   In fact, we have to put these unhelpful desires to death – actually kill the wrong desires and passions within us.

Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.  (Galatians 5:24 NLT)

We have God’s Holy Spirit living in us giving us awesome power to choose life.  But, the choice is ours.  What choice will we make?

…The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. (John 14:17 NIV)
