Where Am I Vulnerable? (1)
Monday May 11, 2015

One of the lovely things in late spring and early summer in Vancouver BC and the area around it is the opportunity to see young eagles grow under the care of their parents. If you can’t get to where the eagles are then you can follow them live on webcams that stream to websites. When we think of eagles we think of large strong birds that soar out of sight and out of reach of other pestering birds. However, when the young ones are newly born and early in their growth they are pretty vulnerable.

For the first number of days the mother bird covers them with herself through much of the day. Every now and then she tears off a piece of fish she or the male eagle has caught and feeds it to the young. Even in the safety of the nest, where there is more than one eaglet, it’s not uncommon for the weaker one to be to be attacked by a stronger sibling. As the eaglets grow the parent eagles will leave the nest for a time. If you are only looking at the nest through the website, you might think these little ones are left alone. However, when the webcam focus is changed to include the nest surroundings you will see one or both parents sitting just a few branches away keeping watch against any predators who might raid the nest. These events remind me of something God says in the Bible.

Just as the young eagles are vulnerable and need the care and protection of their parents, so you and I, in our ordinary daily lives are also vulnerable. We require God’s shelter, support, and watchful care. Today is a good day to remind ourselves of our vulnerability and offer our daily life to the care of God
