How we react to situations and events in our day to day life in recovery shows the source of our strength. It is God’s plan and desire that we face everyday life with Him, remembering FIRST that God is in control, God cares for us, and God has a good plan for whatever is going on in us or around us.

We can make our own plans, but the Lord gives the right answer. (Proverbs 16:1 NLT)

A famous devotional writer, Oswald Chambers, says "There are times when there is no storm or crisis in our lives, and we do all that is humanly possible. But it is when a crisis arises that we instantly reveal upon whom we rely."

I bow before your holy Temple as I worship. I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness; for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name. As soon as I pray, you answer me; you encourage me by giving me strength.  (Psalm 138:2-3 NLT)

In addiction we reacted to difficult circumstances in unhelpful ways.  We sought to control or evade problems and situations.  We bullied or tried to manipulate to try to solve our problem.  Life in recovery is about facing problems knowing that we don’t face them alone.

God invites us:  Call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.  (Psalm 50:15)

Prayer for everyone, including those of us in recovery, is tapping into the unlimited resources of our loving Heavenly Father who is interested in our problems and the problems of those about whom we care. God is greater than any problem we face – particularly those that seem unmanageable to us.  God wants us to seek Him in prayer over and over again throughout our day so our strength is renewed as each day's challenges arise.  God’s desire is for us to live victoriously, regardless of our circumstances.  No one needs help to live like that more than those of us recovering from various addictions and dependencies.

Let’s not wait until we are facing adversity or wake up after a relapse to seek God in prayer. Let’s learn how to pray FIRST in good times and then again in difficult times. Let’s be relentless in praying.
