Summer Reflections (2)

Friday July 3, 2015

It’s wonderful to be outside during the summer.  There’s so much beauty to be seen all around us. A short walk, a bike ride, or even trip on transit is all that separates many of us from time in the forest, time at the ocean or a lake or river, or just enjoying the sound of laughing children in a city park.

As we notice the fullness of the trees during these lovely summer days, let's be reminded of God's word that says we should spend time with those who are seeking to follow God so that we can also flourish.  Let’s limit our time with those who are living on self-directed ways and may cause us to stumble.  We will stand strong and healthy when we follow God's ways rather than the ways of those who follow their own self-will.

Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do. (Psalm 1:1-3 NLT)

Here on the West Coast of Canada we sometimes have the privilege of watching eagles raise their young.  Often we see eagles sitting on the tree watching over their nest or soaring in the sky above us.  How do eagles remind us of God?

Have you never heard?  Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary.  No one can measure the depths of his understanding. He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion. But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.  (Isaiah 40:28-31 NLT)

As we think of God we cannot fail to mention the mountains we see all around us here in beautiful British Columbia.  It’s God Himself who invites us to look up to the mountains and let them remind us of His strength and help that’s always available to us.

I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth! He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps. (Psalm 121:1-4 NLT)

There are so many beautiful things in the summer season that remind us of God’s goodness.  What will we see today?
