Avoidable Trouble (2)

Friday August 21, 2015

Today we are continuing to look at some scenarios which will help us walk in the life-giving ways of peace and blessing that God desires for us to experience.  Life brings troubles and problems.  Every person will face some.  However, there are many troubles and problems that we can avoid if we get to know and follow God’s word and principles for living.

It’s important to surround ourselves with wise godly people, and ask for, and follow their advice.  Early in recovery, many of us feel comfortable with people who think and sound like us.  Unfortunately we, and they, have been shaped by the brokenness that bound us to destructive and addictive lifestyles which were filled with needless troubles.  Real change and real release from trouble comes when we seek God and turn from our former ways, even though it means doing things in ways that are new and unfamiliar to us.

Here are five principles from God’s word that warn us away from danger and invite us to go forward with peace and stability.

1.        Walk with the wise and become wise; associate with fools and get in trouble.  (Proverbs 13:20 (NLT)
2.        The crooked heart will not prosper; the lying tongue tumbles into trouble.  (Proverbs 17:20 NLT)
3.        Blessed are those who fear to do wrong, but the stubborn are headed for serious trouble.  (Proverbs 28:14  NLT)
4.        The trustworthy person will get a rich reward, but a person who wants quick riches will get into trouble.  (Proverbs 28:20 NLT)
5.        The people refused to enter the pleasant land, for they wouldn’t believe his promise to care for them.  (Psalm 106:24  NLT)

Let’s leave behind our old ways of: relying on ourselves; trusting in the empty promises of quick riches; listening to those who lie and cheat and look for shortcuts out of problems, only to find themselves with added troubles.  Let’s trust God’s unfailing word that He will take us to a pleasant place and care for us when we turn our will and our lives over to His care.
