Good Counselors (5)

As we journey forward in our recovery, God provides wise counselors to accompany us and support us in our new way of living.  God never planned for us to live independent of His loving counsel nor of the counsel of wise individuals who can care for our soul.  As we listen and learn today, it’s important to seek counsel from safe and mature individuals.  What are some signs to take note of?

We want to learn from people who are mature in their faith which is evidenced in their character.  We would do well today to look for a person who clearly represents God in every area of their life and relationships.

Don't let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.  (1 Timothy 4:12 NLT)

Good counselors know it's important not to fix but to support.  They come alongside with compassion and hope but not with pity and co-dependent rescue.  They demonstrate that they've learned that God is the ultimate helper for those they are accompanying.

The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord—and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.  (Isaiah 11:2-4 NIV)

Most of all, a Godly sponsor and counselor knows that their own knowledge is limited.  They will regularly consult God's word and follow it in every area of their lives.  They will encourage us to seek God's word as we pursue direction and answers to our questions and struggles.  They know the only completely dependable counsel is the word of God.

Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.  (Colossians 3:16 NLT)
