A Blameless Conscience (1)

God has created us as moral beings. He has given us a built-in monitor, a conscience that is intended to act as a guide in helping us recognize when our behaviour is right or wrong.

The purpose of my instruction is that all believers would be filled with love that comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and genuine faith.  (1 Timothy 1:5 NLT)

God has given us His Word which describes how life works and how relationship with Him is meant to be.  However, we live in a world that has been infected and broken by sin.  We hear all kinds of false messages and we spend years becoming familiar with ways of living that are contrary to God's way.  Our conscience gets corrupted and we can no longer rely on its direction for good in our lives.

Everything is pure to those whose hearts are pure. But nothing is pure to those who are corrupt and unbelieving, because their minds and consciences are corrupted.  (Titus 1:15 NLT)

Part of the journey of life with God in recovery, is the renewing of our minds with God's principles which reshape our conscience. We need to have our conscience renewed in order that it may clearly point us in the direction of what is right and good and will give warning when we are straying in the path of wrong doing.  When we disobey the guidance of our renewed conscience we will feel guilty about any wrong we deliberately have chosen to do.  Our renewed conscience will also inform us to live in peace when we have confessed our wrong, made amends to anyone we may have harmed, and received God's forgiveness.

Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.  When outsiders who have never heard of God’s law follow it more or less by instinct, they confirm its truth by their obedience. They show that God’s law is not something alien, imposed on us from without, but woven into the very fabric of our creation. There is something deep within them that echoes God’s yes and no, right and wrong.  (Psalm 119:105, NIV, Romans 2:14-15 MSG)

God, thank you for forgiveness and new life that you offer me through Jesus.  Help me to hear the voice of your Spirit today so that I may be guided into the knowledge of all truth and once again have a reliable and good conscience.
