Lifestyle Of Honour

My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge.  (Psalm 62:7 NIV)

God created us to live as honourable people – honouring God, honouring others, and experiencing the joy of living as persons of integrity and honour.  Living life only to please ourselves, whether in addiction or recovery, leaves us dissatisfied and vulnerable to destructive ways of living.  However, living our lives with God in recovery is truly satisfying and purposeful.  How can we find this lifestyle of honour?

Wisdom’s instruction is to fear the Lord, and humility comes before honor.  (Proverbs 15:33 NIV)

We affirm in Step 2 of Alcoholics Anonymous, that we have come to believe that a power greater than ourselves can restore us to sanity.  We move forward in this journey of “coming to believe” when we honour God as our Higher Power and by determining in our hearts to obey His instructions.  In due course, as we follow His ways, we come to experience that honouring God gives us a stable, loving, and satisfying relationship with Him.  This all-wise, all-powerful God of love, knows the best way for His creation to live and, as we read His word in the Bible, guides us into a lifestyle of honour as we put His principles into action in every situation in life.

A religious scholar asked Jesus which is the greatest commandment in God’s law.  Jesus responded by saying that there are two commandments which are foundational to all of God’s laws.  These commandments instruct us to love God and love our neighbour.

Jesus replied, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ The entire law and all the demands of the prophets are based on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40 NLT)

These two decrees form the base of a life filled with honour.  We honour God by loving Him and seeking to obey His principles, even when it is inconvenient to do so.  We honour others by loving and respecting them, even when they are not pleasing to us.  We live this way not in obligation, but in grateful response for the love and grace poured out on us through the death and resurrection of Jesus.  He paid the price for our sin and gave us access to a Holy God.  Amazingly, when we give ourselves to honouring our gracious God and those around us, we will undoubtedly experience honour in return.
