Living One Day At A Time (1)

Monday September 21, 2015

So watch your step, friends. Make sure there’s no evil unbelief lying around that will trip you up and throw you off course, diverting you from the living God. For as long as it’s still God’s Today, keep each other on your toes so sin doesn’t slow down your reflexes. If we can only keep our grip on the sure thing we started out with, we’re in this with Christ for the long haul. These words keep ringing in our ears: Today, please listen; don’t turn a deaf ear as in the bitter uprising.  (Hebrews 3:12-14 MSG)

A key principle we often hear about in recovery circles is "living one day at a time."  In many meetings someone will read "Just for Today" - a list of positive things to give focused attention to in this day. When we pray the full version of the Serenity Prayer we come to a line that says, "living one day at time, enjoying one moment at a time..."  As we exercise the Twelve Steps in order to maintain our life in recovery, many of us have found wisdom and help when practicing the Tenth Step each day. God's Word encourages us to reflect on our ongoing life in recovery, to make healthy choices today, to sort out problems today, and to surrender our will and our lives into God's care today and every day.

We live in a world that says, “If it feels good, do it.”  In our addictions, many of us ran after numerous destructive things in order to try and feel good. As we leave this life behind, we may struggle to do what is right rather than what is convenient.  We want to “feel good fast.”  However, God invites us to assess the quality of our lives based on the daily following of His proven principles.

Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you.  (Psalm 37:3-5 NLT)

Today God has a plan for our lives that is meaningful, purposeful and joyful through each step of the journey. Let's not rely on our own plan today, instead, let’s choose God's plan.
