Powerlessness (4)

He (God) gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.  (Isaiah 40:29 NLT)

When we admit that we are powerless over our lives, God invites us to let go of all that is unmanageable and turn to Him. He is the source of all power and strength.  Just as we need to plug a lamp into the electrical socket, which is the source of power in our homes, so we need to plug ourselves into the power of the Holy Spirit of God to be enlightened in our lives.   When we do, the reality is that God will begin to work all things together for our ultimate good.  That includes everything ugly in our past, everything confusing in our present,  and everything unfamiliar and unknown in our future.

O Lord, I have come to you for protection; don’t let me be disgraced.  Save me, for you do what is right.  Turn your ear to listen to me; rescue me quickly.  Be my rock of protection, a fortress where I will be safe.  (Psalm 31:1-2 NLT)

The first step towards fixing anything that is broken, is to acknowledge the truth, that it is broken.  We may try to piece things together to give an appearance of being unbroken but it is likely that the brokenness is evident to all those around us.   Sometimes we are very reluctant to admit our brokenness and powerlessness.  We try all sorts of things except the one that works -- taking the broken thing back to the original maker who knows best how to fix it.  God, our creator, has a solution for our brokenness and powerlessness if we come to Him for help, and receive from Him those things that will actually give us life.

When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good.  But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners. (Romans 5:6-8 NLT)

Today, let’s call on the help of the living God to bring us to the knowledge of all truth and admit that we are helpless and need a saviour.
