Twelve Steps Of A.a. Step One My Life Is Unmanageable (1)

Monday October 26, 2015

Step One:  We admitted that we were powerless over our dependencies, that our life had become unmanageable.

Why do we continue to do life in our own way when it obviously isn’t pleasing, even to us?  Someone has defined insanity as doing the same action over and over again and expecting a different result. Another slogan says, “If nothing changes, nothing changes.”  Doing life on our own without God has led us to empty, lonely, and shame-filled places.

We have met certain needs with short-term solutions and ended up with a more frustrating level of need.  God wants to give us power and guidance through His Holy Spirit so we can live a meaningful, peaceful, and purposeful life.  As long as we are filling our lives with chaos, thrashing around in our own panic and distractions, we’ll never have a chance to know what a purposeful and pleasing life looks like.

The Bible gives us a clear picture of our rebelliousness and the useless powerless effort of trying to do things for ourselves.  God explains, My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.  (Jeremiah 2:13 NIV)

We are created to live in relationship with God – the God of infinite knowledge, power, and love.  Our basic nature is to continually draw fresh life from our Creator through Jesus Christ.  Without His life in us, we will fall apart and our life will become a mess.  A solution of bleach and water will clean a kitchen counter or a bathroom by removing bacteria.  However, it will harm and destroy our digestive system if we ingest it. To live life in relationship with God and others, we need to fill up on what our Creator intended not on what we think might work.

“What did your people of long ago find wrong with me?  Why did they wander so far away from me? They worshiped worthless statues of gods. Then they themselves became worthless.   Has a nation ever changed its gods?  Actually, they are not even gods at all. But my people have traded away their glorious God. They have traded me for worthless statues of gods. (Jeremiah 2:5, 11 NIRV)

Today is a good day to give up the worthless things that are actually destroying our life.  Why not turn to the one true God and admit that life without Him is unmanageable.
