Twelve Steps Of A.a. Step Three Turn Our Will And Our Lives Over To The Care Of God (1)

Friday October 30, 2015

Step 3:  We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

This step requires action toward another person and that person is God.  In the A.A. “12 x 12” book it says, “It is only by ACTION that we can cut away the self-will which has always blocked the entry of God into our lives.”  Why would we take on this challenging action and give God entry into our lives?  The truth is, we will never experience real satisfaction in life until we shape our lives by what is real and only God knows what that is.

Jesus said:  I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.  (John 14:6 NIV)

Only by inviting God to live in us and allowing Him to direct our thinking will we ever find what we’ve been looking for all along.

Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God.  Let them be a living and holy sacrifice – the kind He will accept. ….  Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think.  Then you will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good and pleasing and perfect His will really is.  (Romans 12:1-2 NLT)

We are created by God and He is the only one who knows the way to fullness of life.  To live this life we need to surrender our will and our life into God’s care.  This will mean NOT always having our own way.  Our happiness is NOT the result of getting what we want when we want it.  In fact, true happiness will only be achieved when we repeatedly say, “NO” to ourselves and “YES” to God’s will.  When we surrender to God’s principles for living, our lives will change and we will know peace in the deepest places of our being.

Doing God’s will is what actually satisfies.  Satisfaction is what we’ve truly longed for without knowing it.  When we begin to live according to God’s will it’s like the light goes on and we think, “This is it.  This is what I’ve been looking for all along.”  In that moment something comes alive within us, something that’s never been alive before, and it truly is satisfying.  Today, let’s surrender our will and our lives into God’s care and ask Him to show us the way forward to a satisfying life.
