Twelve Steps Of A.a. Step Two Power Greater Than Ourselves (1)

Step Two: Came to believe that a power greater that ourselves could restore us to sanity.

Step Two is often referred to as “The Hope Step”.  In Step Two, what has been impossible for us to do on our own becomes possible when we place ourselves in the presence of someone or something that surpasses our individual human ability to understand.  We reach out for help to a power greater than ourselves.

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.  (Hebrews 11:6 NLT)

The Bible tells us that the key to life is in the nature of the “higher power” we look to.  The God of the Bible is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-loving.  He’s the one who created the world.  He’s the God who planned for each of us to have a loving and caring relationship with Him, and then with others.  He’s the one who planned a solution for the sinful mistakes of mankind before they even committed them.  Step two invites us to get to know this God and how He planned a satisfying life for us.

If we see God as one waiting to reward us, we will be more eager to come to Him.  If our faith has not yet matured to that point yet, we can start by asking God to help us have more faith.  As we get to know God, we can then ask him for the courage to hope for a better future.  Life with God will result in forgiveness for our sins, acceptance as we are, and unconditional love to help us be the person He created us to be.

The Bible says of faith, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see..”  (Hebrews 11:1 NLT)

The question for us today is, "Do we want to be restored to sanity" or do we want to continue in our chaos and live life on our own terms?  One definition of insanity is "performing the same action again and again, each time expecting to achieve a different result."  Have we had enough of our own insanity?  Today, why not take a chance and allow God to restore us to sanity?
