Twelve Steps Of A.a. Step Six Entirely Ready For Defects To Be Removed (1)

Step Six:  We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

In order to be entirely ready for our defects of character to be removed, we need to give up being the person in charge of the change process in our lives.  We need to totally turn our will and our lives over to the direction of God.  Up to this point we have been the person making all the decisions in our lives.

Now we have come to the point where we need to surrender ourselves to God and allow Him to be in control.  God is the one who gets to decide what is best for us, what is best for our relationships, what is best for our well-being for today and for the long haul.  What God says needs changing, gets worked on until it changes.  What God says needs removing, gets removed. When God says to bear with something patiently, we hang in and tolerantly bear with it.

Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. (Colossians 3:12-15 NLT)

In fulfilling Step 6 we need to surrender control of how we think the healing process will work.  We allow God, through His word in the Bible, to guide us along new pathways of discernment in our minds and in our hearts.  By consenting to this we will begin to believe that what God says in His word, He will do.  We surrender over and over again to God’s invitation to fullness of life.  We continually ask ourselves, “God, what do I need to change so Your kingdom comes, and your will is done here in my life on earth as it is in heaven?”

So put to death the sinful, earthly things lurking within you. Have nothing to do with sexual immorality, impurity, lust, and evil desires. Don’t be greedy, for a greedy person is an idolater, worshiping the things of this world. Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. (Colossians 3:5; Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT)

Today, let’s make a decision to be willing to submit to God’s ways and allow Him to remove ALL our defects of character.
