Facing Problems With Confidence (1)

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.  (Hebrews 4:15 NIV)

For many of us life sometimes seems like a jumble of coloured strings all tangled and knotted together.  Each tangled coloured string represents a different part of our life – family, work, responsibilities, breakdowns, broken promises, destructive behaviours, consequences, etc.  Each knot represents something that should have been dealt with at the time it happened but, for various reasons, was not.  Over a period of time, the jumble of knots and tangles not dealt with will get larger and even more complex.

The truth is, the mess formed because we couldn’t or didn’t bother to deal with issues one at a time.  Knots may have been formed in childhood as issues were unresolved.  As we matured, other life events got entangled with the unresolved childhood issues. The responsibilities of adult life were hampered by the mess already created and, to cope, we sought relief in dysfunctional relationships and harmful substances.  This is where we may be now. Life seems confusing and the jumble of knotted strings needs to be sorted.  It will take time and effort to work through the mess but, with God’s help, we will succeed.

Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.  In my desperation I prayed, and the Lord listened; he saved me from all my troubles.  (Psalm 34:5-6 NLT)

Sometimes we are unsure if we really want help for our situation.  Our confidence in ourselves is at rock bottom and we are still trying to believe that there is hope.  We have come to believe that there is a power greater than ourselves that can restore us to sanity but, can we trust Him with all our problems?  If we seek God, He will even help us be willing to turn our will and our lives over to His care.  God will do for us what we cannot do for ourselves if we will simply ask Him.

Create in me a clean heart, O God.  Renew a loyal spirit within me.  Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.  (Psalm 51:10, 12 NLT)
