Walking Warily Or Taking Steps Tenderly

Tuesday December 15, 2015

We are living in the season of long dark nights.  Fortunately the Christmas lights help to brighten the dark evenings.  They are a reminder to us that no matter how dark our days, the coming of Jesus to any day brings light and hope and joy.  Jesus is the light of the world.  Jesus is the reason for the season.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, "I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”  (John 8:12 NLT)

God is aware that there have been, and may still be, troublesome times in our lives.  God understands dark and troubled times.  God understands empty places. God is with us when times of trouble come and He is willing to comfort and restore us.  It only takes one small light to show us the way in a dark place.   Where there is darkness, God will be our light. Together, we walk in the light of His presence and He watches over us.  In the past we walked alone in our darkness.  Now God is with us, we need never face our problems alone.  He may not be physically visible to us but we have His Word that He will lead us in the way we should go.  God promises to protect us from danger. God promises us peace in the midst of storms.

“I am GOD, your God, who teaches you how to live right and well. I show you what to do, where to go. If you had listened all along to what I told you, your life would have flowed full like a river, blessings rolling in like waves from the sea.  (Isaiah 48:17-18 MSG)
Christmas display lights show best against dark skies.  We do not need to fear that darkness may consume the light we need.  The opposite is the case when we welcome the light of Christ to shine on whatever circumstances we find ourselves in.  His truth will shine brightly in our darkness when we trust His word and follow His directions.  Just like Christmas lights have to be plugged in and turned on for their beauty to be seen, we have to be connected to God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to be filled up with light.  The power and guidance of the Holy Spirit will make us shine brightly through any darkness we may encounter.

Today, let’s open our hearts to God's tender mercy and welcome the hope and light that Jesus brings.  Together with Jesus, we can walk out of the shadow of death into God's glorious light.

Because of God’s tender mercy, the morning light from heaven is about to break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, and to guide us to the path of peace.” (Luke 1:78-79 NLT)
