Security Vs. Insecurity (1)

I cling to you; your strong right hand holds me securely. (Psalm 63:8 NLT)

As humans we have a need for security in many forms, security within our own family, security about who we are inside our own heads, security of our position within any group we are a part of, security in our place of residence, security from any type of threat to our wellbeing and other things we may see as threats.  Lack of anything we may consider essential makes us feel insecure.  Many addicts use drugs and alcohol to seek to cover up or compensate for feelings of insecurity.

What a great relief it is to learn when we come into recovery circles that security is not provided by our circumstances.  With this new understanding, we have an opportunity to know how we can truly live secure.

Wealth and honor come from you alone, for you rule over everything. Power and might are in your hand, and at your discretion people are made great and given strength. (1 Chronicles 29:12 NLT)

The Bible names the one true source of security for us and that is in God alone.  With the assurance of God’s word as written in the Bible, and the fact that through belief in Jesus’ finished work on earth we are children of God, we should sleep like babies every night. God does not slumber or sleep so He is our security at all times.  Instead of simply switching from drugs and alcohol to money, popularity, relationships, - even damaging relationships - or anger and violence, to give us security, we can now find security in the one true source – God.  If we are still looking to people and things for our security, the good news is, we can change our focus and find everything we need in the Lord who made heaven and earth.

I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.  The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in from this time forth, and even forevermore. (Psalm 121:1-2, 7-8 NKJV)
