Security Vs. Insecurity (2)
Tuesday January 19, 2016

In peace I will both lie down and sleep, For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety. (Psalm 4:8 NASB)

When we watch the news at night we know from various reports that we live in a dangerous and harmful world and there are many threats to our security in everyday life. Violence is on the rise. Our friends and others die from drug and alcohol related problems. The government increases prison beds and fills them all. Bait cars abound and still thousands of cars are stolen in our city. Robberies are so numerous that police don’t even respond to 911 calls unless the robbery is in progress. Random shootings in Paris and other cities threaten daily life. Earthquakes, fire, and damaging floods in various neighbourhoods remind us of how vulnerable we are and how fragile life is.

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. So we will not fear when earthquakes come and the mountains crumble into the sea. (Psalm 46:1-2 NLT)
We need a safe place to run to when disaster, pain, or loss seek to overwhelm us. Why, at times like these, do we first run to people or physical things to give us comfort and security rather than seek God? God knows our needs before we even ask Him, so God could and would help us if He were sought. Perhaps one of the reasons we do not seek God first when problems happen is the fact that He is not visible. Maybe we think we shouldn’t bother God because, as His children, we feel we should not be having trouble in this world? Jesus assured us that we would have trouble in this world but we are not to fear it. The Bible also tells us to call on God in our day of trouble. Perhaps we hesitate in seeking God because we feel insecure in being legitimate children of God.

The good news today is that if we believe and confess that through Jesus we have been set right with God, then we truly are children of God. Like any good earthly father, our Heavenly Father will act on our behalf when we call on Him in our day of trouble. People may help but God in us is greater than any problem and He is willing and ready to help in our time of need. We really can be secure in the fact that God cares for us.
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me. (John 16:33; Psalm 50:15 NKJV)
