The Serenity Prayer, in either the short or full version, is said in 12- step meetings around the world.  What are we praying when we say these words?

In the first place we are addressing God. Who is this God? On a clear night go outside and look at the stars in the sky.  Stroll along a beach and listen to the rhythm of ocean waves.  Catch a glimpse of a soaring eagle.  Observe a little buttercup pushing its way through a concrete sidewalk.  The God who created all this beauty and strength is the God to whom we speak.

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! (Isaiah 26:3 NLT)

God is not just an anonymous power who can create powerful and beautiful things. God is personal and has taken great effort to come close to us so we could get to know Him and find peace and serenity in relationship with Him as we live our daily lives. Jesus Christ is God in human flesh.  He taught and healed and loved people.  He lived a perfect sinless life and then died on the cross to provide forgiveness for the sins of all humans.  When we put our trust in Him, we enter into a living relationship with the God to whom we speak the Serenity Prayer.  Not only does peace settle into our hearts but the goodness of God's gifts overflow into every area of our lives.

The Lord forgives our sins, heals us when we are sick, and protects us from death. His kindness and love are a crown on our heads. Each day that we live, he provides for our needs and gives us the strength of a young eagle. For all who are mistreated, the Lord brings justice. The Lord is merciful! He is kind and patient, and his love never fails. The Lord won’t always be angry and point out our sins; he doesn’t punish us as our sins deserve. (Psalm 103:3-6, 8-10 CEV)

This is the God we address when we pray the Serenity Prayer.
