We’ve relapsed. Now what? We may beat ourselves up over what we have done and become fearful of owning up to our bad choice. However, being truthful with those in our recovery circle will set us free from the bent of wanting to hide our actions. Admitting our failure, which God already knows about, and seeking God’s help to get back on track, is the way to move forward to a purposeful life.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me? Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. (Psalm 56:3-4; Hebrews 4:16 NIV)
People in our family and in our recovery circle may be disappointed that we gave in to our drug of choice, or fears, or both, but many will understand the relentless pressure of the evil one against us. Our reputation may suffer for a day or two, but God will restore us and use the things that have happened to us, for our good and His glory. God is in the restoration business and He is the giver of life to the full. Life in slavery to fear and addiction is the evil one’s tools for keeping us in captivity. As we come back from a relapse we need to choose the focus of our thinking – will it be on restoration or failure?

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12)
God really is for us and not against us. If we invite Him into every circumstance He will help us deal with the consequences of failure. When we repent and get honest, God is faithful to forgive us, and purify us from all wrong doing. He will also provide the power we need to do those things that we cannot do for ourselves.

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you. (2 Corinthians 13:11 NIV)
Today, let’s resolve to live free from condemnation over past failure and live in the extravagant grace of God.
