The Bible is a handbook for living wisely.  Its pages contain all sorts of guidelines for living life as our creator intended.  In our journey of life in recovery we have no need to be fearful when we encounter storms, as long as we follow God’s plan.  God’s instructions are reliable.  His unfailing love and guidance will direct us to a safe and successful destination.

“Anyone who listens to My teaching and obeys Me is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against the house, it won’t collapse, because it is built on rock”. (Matthew 7:24-25 NLT)

To live wisely, when recovering from the storms of years in addiction, we need to develop a spirit of humility which says, “I don’t know what is best for me today but I’m willing to learn.  I’m willing to think new thoughts and practice new behaviours which God, through His word, is teaching me.”

There are numerous self-help books that can provide some benefit in understanding ourselves, our family of origin, and some natural tendencies that go along with our personality.  However, it is important to remember that God has revealed the way to a good, pleasing and perfect life in the Bible.  Anything that contradicts principles written in the Bible is nothing more than “limited worldly wisdom” which we would do well to lay aside in the same way we have set aside the lies and misconceptions of our addictive and obsessive thinking.

For the Lord grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of common sense to the honest. He is a shield to those who walk with integrity.  He guards the paths of the just and protects those who are faithful to him. Then you will understand what is right, just, and fair, and you will find the right way to go. For wisdom will enter your heart, and knowledge will fill you with joy. (Proverbs 2:6-10 NLT)

Perhaps this is a day for learning about the difference between what we think, what our world thinks, and what is true because God said it.  Basing our lives on God’s revealed word of truth is the sure foundation for success in recovery.
