Practical Tips For Avoiding Temptation

Friday March 18, 2016

God promises to supply what we need to overcome temptation.  He will empower us to keep us on the right path even during difficult times of temptation.  What God starts, God finishes.  Where we are weak, God shows Himself strong on our behalf. The most powerful strategy for overcoming temptation is choosing to believe these facts and reminding ourselves of them as often as necessary.

May God himself, the God who makes everything holy and whole, make you holy and whole, put you together—spirit, soul, and body—and keep you fit for the coming of our Master, Jesus Christ. The One who called you is completely dependable. If he said it, he’ll do it!  God says:  “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.  (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24 MSG, 2 Corinthians 12:9 NIV)

Some practical ways we can express our trust in God’s care for us and move beyond temptation include:

·         Recognize what’s going on – the devil is trying to destroy us.  Do we want him to succeed?

·         Stop obsessing on whatever is tempting us and pray instead.  Ask God for healing, comfort, and insight.

·         Reach out for support and solutions.  Seek help until we connect with someone who can help.

·         Be willing to see any problem in perspective.  We need to see some positive initiatives to handling a problem.  We also need to see the negative consequences that will result from mishandling a problem and enjoying one fleeting moment of pleasure. We need to tell ourselves the whole truth about our situation.

·         Distract ourselves with healthy thoughts and choose, just for one day, to believe God’s word and act accordingly.  One day quickly grows to two and then a week, a month, a year, and then a lifetime.

Jesus taught us to pray, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.”  (Matthew 6:9-13 NIV)

God will hear that prayer today from any of us who sincerely come to Him and He will deliver us from the power of temptation.
