Recovering Life In Relationship (2)

Wednesday March 30, 2016

As we leave a lifestyle of active addiction and begin to follow God in our new life in recovery, we may have questions about the future, wondering how this new life of ours is going to work out.  Will God really lead us into a life that we will experience as good?  God created us and, better than anyone else including ourselves, knows our every need.  If we rely on him completely, God promises to lead us along the best pathway for our life.  He has infinite wisdom and power to accomplish what He has promised us.

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. (Psalm 32:8 NLT)

The foundation of a healthy and satisfying life is healthy relationships with God and with others.  In our addictions, our primary relationship was with the object of our obsession – our bottle, our drug, our habit.  Life was without the nourishing relationships God intended us to have.   Life on our own was overwhelmingly lonely and burdensome.  The first step towards building a satisfying life in relationship is to turn away from the isolation and loneliness of an addictive lifestyle, and enter into a relationship with God through Jesus. Trust in God is essential to forming a relationship of trust with people.  As we practice and grow in our loving relationship with God, healthy relationships with others will naturally follow.

The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy. I burst out in songs of thanksgiving.  (Psalm 28:7 NLT)

We need to consciously choose each day to live with faithfulness and integrity in our work relationships, our family relationships and our friendships.   We must continually assess the health of any relationship based on God’s word.  Each day we need to seek God for His guidance and direction for any decisions we make concerning others and their involvement with us. Are we willing to offer forgiveness and live in peace with another person when God challenges us concerning our behaviour towards that person?

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.  (Philippians 2:5 NIV)

God offers us new life in all our relationships as we base them on our relationship with Him.  How are we doing that today?
