Vulnerable To Temptation

What makes us vulnerable to temptation?  We come into recovery and we work hard to understand what went wrong.  We are coached on new ways of thinking and behaving.  Too often, however, we bump into unexpected challenges and notice our thoughts and feelings drifting into areas that are dark and dangerous. Life isn’t perfect and recovery isn’t easy.  Things change more slowly than we would like them to.  We try hard to stay on course but sometimes can’t see a way forward.  We begin to think that God has forgotten us.  It’s in these moments that we need to call out to God for help and follow His word relentlessly, rather than act on the thoughts in our own head.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Commit everything you do to the LORD. Trust him, and he will help you. (Proverbs 3:5-6, Psalm 37:5 NLT)

Just living the day before us sometimes seems to have more challenges than we are comfortable with.  Our goals seem impossibly far away with numerous obstacles that appear overwhelming. Individuals or organizations who should be helping us seem to put barriers and roadblocks in our path.  Little by little, in our discouragement, we start to think it’s hardly worth trying.  Nobody seems to care anyway.  We begin to pass the time and just get through the day rather than sharing with someone or learning something new.   We do not share what we are feeling and try to sort things out for ourselves.  Although we have sought God, it appears trusting in Him is not getting the results we want.  Underneath all of this frustration and uncertainty is the belief that we deserve something better than this.  What rich soil for the evil one to fill with poisoned seeds that grow harmful weeds of doubt and unbelief.

God has not forgotten us.  God does care for us.  God does have a way forward if we will continue to trust Him and surrender our will and these troubling parts of our life to Him.

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. (I Peter 5:7, Matthew 6:33 NLT)
