What Does Jesus' Death Have To Do With Me? (1)
Monday March 21, 2016

What does the suffering and death of Jesus Christ have to do with me and my recovery? The death of Jesus was a demonstration of God’s love for us. Jesus gave His life in order that the penalty for the sins of all humans would be paid in full. When we accept Jesus’ death as payment for sins committed against us and sins committed by us, we never again need our substance of choice to relieve the shame and pain we have been feeling. Jesus took it all on Himself when He was crucified.

Most of us realize that at some point in our past we have harmed others to some degree by our actions, our words, or our neglect. The death and resurrection of Jesus, which we celebrate at Easter, is a reminder that He came to earth to die for us so that we could be forgiven, healed, and restored. In whatever ways we have experienced evil done to us or evil done by us, Jesus paid the price for our freedom from the penalty of those sins. Jesus allowed the wickedness of sin to be heaped on him at the cross so that our relationship with our Heavenly Father could be restored. The challenge for us is to believe and accept what He has done for us.

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:1-11 NLT)

We can sit around and wallow in our pain, self-pity, and hatred, or, we can bundle it all up and let Jesus take it from us. He already paid the price for our restoration and forgiveness through His death on the cross. Let’s choose to turn away from our sin and brokenness and turn to God for renewal and peace which is available to us today.
