The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing But The Truth, So Help Me God (5)

The foundation of our new life in recovery is based on finding life with the one true God.  For a variety of reasons many people find it challenging to even want to know God, let alone to turn their will and their life over to His care.  Why?  We’ve believed things about God that just aren’t true.  To find real recovery we’ll need to uncover what lies and distortions we carry about God and be willing to destroy them.

We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.  (2 Corinthians 10:5 NLT)

God is not an old bearded man sitting passively in the clouds somewhere waiting for us to get our lives together and come to Him.  God loves us so much that when we were helpless, He showed up and gave us the hope and strength we needed to reach out and receive His love.  Through Jesus’ humanity, God came close to us and restored the way to eternal life and friendship with Him.

When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. (Romans 5:6 NLT)

Why would God do that?  Because of His love for us.  When God created us He had a wonderful plan for our lives.  God knows the mess we made by trying to do life on our own.  In spite of this, He is not an angry, accusing and condemning being, just waiting to hit us over the head, as many suppose Him to be.

“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.  God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.  (John 3:16-17 NLT)

The truth is, in the wreckage of our lives caused by our own self-will, God comes alongside us to rescue us and give us the life we’ve always wanted.  We do not need to hide our sin from God but rather bring it to Him and let Him transform us.  When we come to God, we will experience a deeply satisfying relationship with Him.  He truly is an awesome God who loves and cares for us.
