Loved Without Condition (2)

Tuesday May 24, 2016

“For better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part.”  These are familiar words of love and commitment we hear at many wedding ceremonies.  The promise God makes to love us with unfailing love is even deeper and more powerful than the promise a couple make to each other on their wedding day.  God is well aware that difficult circumstances will come into our lives.  He’s aware that there are all kinds of forces out there seeking to destroy our loving relationship with Him.  Regardless, God’s promise lasts forever.  His promise of unconditional love never changes because God never changes.

This is what we are affirming and seeking to understand and enter into when we affirm Life Affirmation #1:  I am loved by God always. I am loved without condition.

The Bible reminds us of the strength of this love with these comforting words:  And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.  No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:38-39 NLT).

You would think that once we recognized and accepted God’s amazing love that we’d delight and live in that love forever but sometimes we don’t.  God is grieved by our faithlessness as we turn away from Him again and again and act as if He did not exist.  However, when we reach out to Him and acknowledge our wrongdoing, He is faithful to forgive us every single time we fail.

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from every wrong. This is real love. It is not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. (1 John 1:9-10 NLT)

While all of our actions and behaviour may not be in keeping with God’s principles, His love is not an emotion that changes with circumstances. He demonstrates “for better for worse” at a completely different level because His very nature is love.  Today is the perfect time to embrace God’s everlasting love into our lives.
