Most of us are well aware of the damage we did to ourselves, our families, and to others in the community when we disregarded God’s authority and tried to do things our own way. We know we cannot live a purposeful life guided only by our own limited thoughts. We know we need to surrender our will and our life to God’s will in order to live and love well. The problem is, even though we know God has supreme authority over all things, we still struggle to surrender when His will differs from what we want.

I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church. (Ephesians 1:18-22 NIV)
Fullness of life in recovery with God really begins when we surrender to the authority of the God who made us. The Bible uses the picture of a potter and clay to help us understand that the creator has authority over all that He creates. When our messy past has spoiled our image, God is able to remake us again in His lovely image. That is why God asks us to turn our will and our life over to Him. He desires only the very best for us and He is able to provide it. Our part is to give Him authority in our lives by following His instructions and principles as found in the Bible.

My child, pay attention to what I say. Listen carefully to my words. Don’t lose sight of them. Let them penetrate deep into your heart, for they bring life to those who find them, and healing to their whole body. (Proverbs 4:20-22 NLT)
Let’s determine from this day forward that God’s word will be a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
