Serenity Saturday Peace From Living Right

People who wink at wrong cause trouble, but a bold reproof promotes peace. Deceit fills hearts that are plotting evil; joy fills hearts that are planning peace! A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones. When people’s lives please the Lord, even their enemies are at peace with them.  (Proverbs 10:10, 12:20, 14:30, 16:17 NLT)

As we read these verses and reflect on the principles they teach, it’s no wonder our lives in addiction were filled with problems and unrest.  How many times did we overlook wrong, plot evil, tell lies, and look with jealousy on what others had, and what they had accomplished?

We come into this day of recovery with God and we want the benefits this new life has to offer us, but sometimes we don’t trust they are available to us unless we use some of our old ways.

What if we were to tell the truth all day long?  In the movie "Liar Liar" Jim Carrey found out how difficult it was to tell the truth all day long.  Over and over again he was confronted with the many ways he was used to lying.  Are we willing to expose the habit of lying so we can finally live in peace?

Health professionals around the world have echoed the claims of the above verses, that when we live in stress we get ill, and when we live in peace we experience more and more health in our bodies.

What an amazing promise we have from God when we live according to His principles – even our enemies will be at peace with us.  It doesn’t happen overnight but over and over again old-timers in recovery remind us that as we walk the walk, the promises of restored relationships come true and old enemies often become friends.  These renewed relationships require us to let go of jealousy and grudges and simply work on our own shortcomings.  We have to learn to accept flawed people, just as while we are still flawed, God and others have accepted us.

And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever. (Isaiah 32:7 NLT)

God’s will and God’s ways work every time and will bring us peace and stability today as we choose to walk the walk.
