Serenity Saturday The Voice Of Peace
Saturday July 16, 2016

All who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm. People who wink at wrong cause trouble, but a bold reproof promotes peace. Deceit fills hearts that are plotting evil; joy fills hearts that are planning peace! A peaceful heart leads to a healthy body; jealousy is like cancer in the bones. Better a dry crust eaten in peace than a house filled with feasting—and conflict. (Proverbs 1:33, 10:10, 12:20, 14:30, 17:21 NLT)

Today we reflect on a few of those wise sayings about peace. Peace comes as we make it our habit to read God’s Word each day, and then put His Word into practice. However, if we reject God’s direction and choose instead for our familiar way of reacting to problems, then we can be sure we'll end up causing more trouble than we are trying to avoid. Jealousy, resentment, and plans for taking revenge won't take us forward in our new life with God in recovery. Instead, they will eat us up and destroy us as surely as out-of-control cancer cells kill a body.

Things like bickering and complaining have a similar effect. Solomon reminds us today that living in peace with nothing to eat but dry bread is much better than feasting in an atmosphere of conflict with all the “creature comforts.” In recovery, many of us face this enticement. We believe the lie that being in a relationship with someone who is abusive and even violent is still better than being on our own. God's word clearly tells us that this is not good for our physical body or our recovery.
It is God's desire that we live in peace and joy, untroubled by harmful things around us. Today, let’s open our ears and listen as God speaks to us through His Word and through the urgings of the Holy Spirit in our hearts.
