Sharing Heart To Heart (5)

One of the places where we learn about God’s offer of a loving relationship is through Step 11 of the Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. The good news is that we don’t have to wait until we’ve completed Steps 1- 10 to begin practicing this principle and to start enjoying the benefits.
Step 11: We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry it out.

The prayer and meditation to which Step 11 invites us is so much more than just trying to figure out what God’s plans are for us. Reading and meditating on the scriptures informs us of all that God promises to do and be for us.
Underneath all of these "spiritual exercises" is God's desire for us to know the heart of love He has for each one of us. Because of His great love for us, God sent His son to die in our place so that we might live forever with Him. God knows the sorrows we’ve been through. Even though we weren’t conscious of His eternal presence, God was close to us each day of our lives, including the most difficult days. The only way to truly rebuild our lives is to intentionally live in the loving presence of our gracious God and obey His word.

In the Bible we are given the following powerful prayer which we can pray to know and experience the love God has for us: I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. (Ephesians 3:16-19 NIV)
