Clay Jars Bring Light

Tuesday August 30, 2016

Then the Lord gave me this message: “O Israel, can I not do to you as this potter has done to his clay? As the clay is in the potter’s hand, so are you in my hand. (Jeremiah 18:5-6 NLT)

In the Bible, the Apostle Paul speaks about his body, using the picture of a clay jar.  He says that what makes his body have meaning and purpose is allowing God's light to shine in his heart.  Like Paul, we may consider our bodies jars of clay.  Things have happened to us that have damaged our bodies and our souls.  However, when we surrender our will and our life to the care of God, He will bring light to our darkness, and the all-surpassing power of God that was in Paul will also be in us.

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. (2 Corinthians 4:6-7 NIV)

We live in a dark world that is marred by all sorts of suffering and brokenness. Jesus Christ came to earth to pay the price for sin and restore eternal life to every human being who will believe in Him.  Many people have never heard that Jesus loves them. We are called to be lights in this world even though we may feel like vulnerable jars of clay.  Sometimes telling others about Jesus will be inconvenient.  Sometimes we will be misunderstood.  Sometimes we will have to be patient and allow others to grow in what they understand about God and step-by-step draw closer to Him.

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:27 NIV)

God is truly at work in our lives transforming us into the vessels through which His glory will be displayed.  Is the incredible beauty of the life of God in us seen by everyone who looks at us?
