When we commence the recovery process we are often lacking the courage to do even the routine daily things that need to be attended to. However, as we make it our practice to turn our will and our life over to the care of God and ask for His help, He will give us the courage we need to perform the daily tasks that we often neglected in our former lifestyle.

In the Bible we read of a young man named Gideon who was hiding from the enemies of his people (Judges 6). He was afraid to be seen at his workplace sifting wheat, because his enemies would seize the wheat from him if they knew he had it. The angel of the Lord visited Gideon and called him a mighty warrior, and told him to go in the strength of the Lord and save his people from their enemies. Gideon doubted the Lord’s word and told Him that his family was the weakest of his clan and he was the lowliest in his family. However, in spite of Gideon’s fearfulness, He followed the instructions of the Lord, and became the mighty warrior the Lord had called him.

All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal. (Psalm 119:160 NIV)
Even though we may feel weak and fearful as we begin the recovery process, God is with us. One day at a time, in the ordinary events of our ordinary lives, God will teach us His ways and lead us in straight paths for our feet. As we consider our future, we can let go of all our fears because God promises to give us the strength and courage we need. With God’s help we can overcome all our obsessions and dependencies.

Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:8-9 NIV)
