Prayer

Monday September 19, 2016

When we began our recovery program, some of us had already been praying for help from a God we did not know.  In the chaos of our brokenness we somehow recognized that we were powerless over our addictions and dependencies and we needed help.  That’s what started us praying.  We were at the point of no return and death was staring us in the face. In our hopelessness we called out to God and asked Him to help us get out of our miserable state.  God was attentive to our prayers.  What made us pray? Why was God attentive? Perhaps there is something within us that already knows there is a power greater than ourselves who can restore us to sanity.

I am praying to you because I know you will answer, O God.  Bend down and listen as I pray.  Show me your unfailing love in wonderful ways.  By your mighty power you rescue those who seek refuge from their enemies.  (Psalm 17:6-7 NLT)

It’s ironic that when we call out to God He hears and answers us.  Might God already be waiting for us to call?  The Bible tells us that God knew each of us before we were formed in our mother’s womb.  Perhaps this is the reason we so readily call out to God and find His help available in our time of need.

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart. (Jeremiah 1:5 NIV)

In the Bible we read that God has put eternity into the heart of humans.  Throughout our lives we may have heard about God in a similar way to hearing about people and places we have never seen.  However, when we are in trouble there appears to be a knowledge of God within us that, even though we do not understand Him, we act on what we are sensing in our spirit and pray to Him for help.

He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live.  (Ecclesiastes 3:11b-12 NIV)

Today provides a good opportunity to consider who God is and perhaps determine to get to know Him better as we pray and seek Him in all our ways.
