Sunday Psalm Eternal Death Or Eternal Life

Sunday September 4, 2016

For all can see that the wise die, that the foolish and the senseless also perish, leaving their wealth to others.  Their tombs will remain their houses forever, their dwellings for endless generations, though they had named lands after themselves.  People, despite their wealth, do not endure; they are like the beasts that perish.  This is the fate of those who trust in themselves, and of their followers, who approve their sayings.  But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead; he will surely take me to himself.  (Psalm 49:10-13, 15 NIV)

The Bible tells us that each person is destined to die just once.  It matters not whether that person is rich or poor.  While trusting in their man-made gods for eternal life, the pharaohs of Egypt had their bodies embalmed and their earthly possessions buried with them when they died.  However, when their tombs were opened, their earthly goods remained untouched and their bodies were still in their caskets.

The writer of this Psalm is convinced that God will redeem him from the realm of the dead and bring him to where He is.  When we die, trusting in Jesus, we know that even though we are absent from the body, we are at home with the Lord.  Our confidence is not based on whether we are sober rather than struggling with our addiction at the time, but is based on Jesus free gift of eternal life offered to those who trust His payment for their sins.  When we turn away from our sin, we no longer live under its condemnation.  Jesus assures us:

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.  (John 3:16-18 NIV)

It’s important to do all we can today to maintain our sobriety.  At the same time, it’s also important to relax and find rest in the assurance we have that the unfailing love and acceptance of God will sustain life in us forever.
