Sunday Psalm Tenderness

Sunday September 11, 2016

One of the things many of us missed while growing up, and which probably had something to do with our journey into addictive and destructive lifestyles, was tenderness.  We got used to feeling that others had no interest in us and no time for us.  We gave up going to anyone with our needs and our troubles because we believed that no one cared.  What a joy and a relief when we come into recovery and find that we finally have someone -- God -- who is offering us the unfailing love and tenderness we have always wanted.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help.  Protect me, for I am devoted to you. Save me, for I serve you and trust you.  (Psalm 186:1-2 NLT)

We can call out to God whenever we need or want to.  We can speak to God as often as we like.  God never gets tired of listening to us.  God is interested in all things that concern us.  God has been waiting for years for us to notice that with love and tenderness He is reaching out to us and inviting us to come close to His heart.

We are as safe with God as a little child is with a loving attentive parent.  Parents are always watching their children to ensure their safety.  They look on with love and enjoyment at the demonstration of new things the child has learned, and even have fun when allowing for the child to make silly mistakes.  They call out to the child to encourage them and clap their hands in celebration when the child does something right.  They smile at the child and the child smiles back.  Their joy and happiness gets transferred very naturally to the little one.  This resembles the restored life of relationship that God offers us today.

You are my God. Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I am calling on you constantly. Give me happiness, O Lord, for I give myself to you. (Psalm 186:3-4 NLT)

You and I are precious to God, He smiles on us and surrounds us with the help and security we need in our recovery today.  Our part?  Call out to God constantly.  Run to God and give ourselves over to His protection and care.  Trust His loving heart for us.
