Trusting God

Tuesday September 6, 2016

As we choose for recovery from our former dependencies, we hear talk about God.  This may be our first time or we may have known about God all our lives but paid little or no attention to Him or to His ways.  Now, in recovery, we are invited to a journey of coming to believe that there is, or must be, a power greater than ourselves who can restore us to sanity.  The graduates from recovery programs assure us that there is. Where exactly are we today in our willingness to trust this God to restore us to sanity?

Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.  (Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV)

In our former lifestyle, we manipulated others and did what we thought was necessary to achieve what we wanted from life.  Our idol was ourselves and each day we pursued those things that brought us pleasure regardless of the impact on our family or others.  We were consumed with self.  God, however, loved us and cared for us, even when we did not know Him.  God was looking out for our well-being when we weren’t.  He sent His one and only Son into the world, not to condemn us, but that we might be saved through Him.  God’s love is unfailing.  Even though we may be unfaithful in things we say and do, God is never unfaithful.  He can be trusted to fulfill all that He has promised.

In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!  If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny who he is. (Philippians 2:5-8 NIV; 2 Timothy 2:13 NLT)

Allowing God to lead us forward in an unknown way is better than travelling a known way on our own.
