Steady Help During All Seasons

The seasons are changing. A few days ago we officially moved from summer to autumn. The sun and moon share more equal hours in our day. The long sunny summer evenings have declined and little by little the night lengthens. Seasons change but God’s care is constant, night and day, in times of light or times of darkness.
I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip— he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord watches over you—the Lord is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. (Psalm 121 NIV)
In ancient times people thought a lot about a “higher power” as they looked at the out-of-control circumstances surrounding them. For example, the forces of nature were unpredictable and had powerful effects on their everyday life because they depended on the weather to have a good harvest. There were rain dances and sacrifices to sun gods. Some people looked to the moon and worshipped the moon god, hoping that help would come from the moon to ward off any trouble.
Whether it is every day circumstances or even things beyond our control, we can look for help to the God who created the sun and moon, and who has power over times and seasons. In the night, when we wake up and anxious thoughts are swirling around in our heads, we can trust that God is still working for good in those things that concern us. He’s not asleep on the job. He’s actively watching over us.
Today let’s put ourselves into God’s care and rely on His strength and love. Whatever we face, let’s remember that God is with us and has the power and wisdom to show us the way. When we lay our heads on our pillow tonight, let’s do so in peace, because while we sleep, God will take care of us.
