Remembrance Day Up Close And Personal

Wednesday November 9, 2016

A few years ago a colleague and I had the privilege of visiting Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.  In school I had learned about what happened at Pearl Harbor during the second world war, but it didn’t make much of an impact on my mind.  Later in my life my mother married a Pearl Harbor survivor.  I often listened to my step-father’s stories about the events that happened at that time and saw some of his pictures, without much interest on my part. It was only when I visited Pearl Harbor and saw the various displays and media writings that I was “brought up close” to what it must have been like to have been there on December 7, 1941 as my stepfather was. My connection to Pearl Harbour was dramatically changed that day.  Historical events were suddenly something much more personal to me because I had a loving relationship with someone who went through the trauma of that event.

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (1 Timothy 1:15, John 3:16 NIV)

It is a recorded historical fact that Jesus Christ died on a cross in Jerusalem over 2000 years ago.  A personal God so loved uncaring individuals like you and me that He sent His son Jesus to endure suffering and death so that we could be reconciled to Him.  This event is “brought up close” to each of us as we enter into a loving relationship with this personal God.   We recognize the unfailing love that caused Jesus to intentionally suffer and die for us on that day.  Jesus gave His life on the cross so each of us would have the opportunity to enter into an eternal deep and abiding relationship with our Heavenly Father.

Heavenly Father, we pause to remember and give thanks for the service of veterans who fought in wars so we could have freedom.  We especially thank you today for Jesus who died on the cross so we could have a personal relationship with You.   Please work in us today so that the death and resurrection of Jesus is not just an historical fact but a living reality.
