Step Six: We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
To be entirely ready for our defects of character to be removed, we need to give up being the person in charge of the change process in our lives. We need to totally turn our will and our lives over to the direction and care of God.
Up to this point we have been the person making all the decisions in our lives. Now we come to the point where we realize we need to surrender ourselves to God and allow Him to be in control. God is the one who gets to decide what is best for us, what is best for our relationships, what is best for our well-being today, and for the long haul. What God says needs changing gets worked on until it changes. What God says needs removing gets removed. When God says to bear with something patiently, we hang in and tolerantly bear with it.
Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Make allowance for each other’s faults, and forgive anyone who offends you. Remember, the Lord forgave you, so you must forgive others. Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. (Colossians 3:12-15 NLT)
Step Six asks us to surrender control of how we think the healing process works. We allow God, through His word in the Bible, to guide us along new pathways of discerning in our minds and in our hearts. We simply ask, “God, what do I need to change so Your kingdom comes, and your will is done here in my life on earth as it is in heaven?”
Heavenly Father, I choose today to submit to your ways and ask You to work in me until I am entirely willing to have You remove ALL my defects of character.
