Twelve Steps Going Forward

As we consider our future, we need to take time to reflect on where we have been and where we want to go from here.  Like any journey we plan to take, we need to know our starting place, our destination, and the way to get there.

When He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. (John 16:13 NKJV)

When God’s people were slaves in Egypt, they cried out to God and through an amazing intervention, God answered their prayers and enabled them to be released from slavery.  On their journey to freedom they encountered some problems and began to dwell on what they remembered as ‘good’ back in Egypt.  They forgot the hard taskmasters and the fact they were suffering horribly as slaves.  They began to long for some things they missed and complained that they would be better off back in Egypt.  How quickly they forgot the miraculous things that God did to free them.

This is what the Lord says - your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: “I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you, who directs you in the way you should go. (Isaiah 48:17 NIV)

God heard us when we cried out in the bondage of our addiction.  He intervened and helped us move forward in our new life in recovery.  However, we may also complain when things are not as we would like, and forget what we encountered in the slimy pit of our addiction.  We may choose to forget the pain of being in bondage to our drug of choice, a destructive habit, and/or, a dysfunctional relationship.

I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have given me life.  (Psalm 119:93 NIV)

In view of our forgetfulness, now may be a good time to give thanks for our recovery program and invite God to accompany us as we journey forward.

Lord Jesus, Thank You for giving me life.  Help me to remember where I came from, where I am now, and where You are leading me.
