Step 11: We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry it out.
In the past, when life became overwhelming, we used our addictions as a hiding place. Now we are in recovery, life may still feel overwhelming because we are not covering up the pain by self-medicating. Like a ship at sea we need a safe harbour where we can find protection from the storms that arise. God is that safe harbour.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. (Romans 12:2 NLT)
If we call on God in troubled times, we need never doubt that He hears and will answer us. The question we need to ask ourselves is, “are we calling on Him and listening to Him”? Step Eleven encourages us to seek to improve our conscious contact with God.
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. (James 1:5-6 NIV)

In Step 11 we are encouraged to meditate on God’s word and become knowledgeable of His will and the power He gives us to carry it out. Through prayer we speak with God and take time to stop and listen to what He has to say.
Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. (Jeremiah 33:3 NIV)
Dear God, I confess I am unfamiliar with Your word and Your ways. Help me to spend time in prayer and meditation on Your word so that I may get to know You more. I ask that You reveal the plan You have for my life and help me to be aware of the power within me to carry it out.
