Some of us may have awakened this morning to the fact that our lives are unmanageable and that we are powerless over our addictive behaviour. We may have been seeking happiness in a dysfunctional lifestyle and have caused ourselves and others a lot of pain by the way we have behaved.  We could be facing the consequences of overspending, overeating, or unfortunate words or actions said and done at gatherings during the holiday season.  As we begin this day and this new year it doesn’t look all that happy and hopeful.

From before we were born, the God who created us knew us and this moment in time.  His desire is to remove the pain of sin from us so we may have new life with Him and peace with others.  This condition of peaceful living is available to every person right here, right now, in the early days of this new year.  What do we need to do to experience it?  We need to believe that God loved us so much that He sent Jesus to earth to suffer death on a cross so that the price of sin, including the sin of our destructive and addictive behaviour, would be paid for in full and our relationship with Him would be restored.

For God made Christ, who never sinned, to be the offering for our sin, so that we could be made right with God through Christ.   (2 Corinthians 5: 21 NLT)

Inviting Jesus into our hearts is the first step in making us right with God.  Receiving the love, forgiveness, and acceptance of God, is the foundation we need to build on as we go forward into this new year and a new life.

The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.  I will protect those who trust in my name.  When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble.  I will rescue and honor them.  I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16 NLT)

Prayer – Dear God, I admit that without You my life is unmanageable.  Please help me find the path of peace and new life that You are offering me.  Come into my heart and forgive me.  Give me strength and wisdom to leave destructive and addictive behaviour behind and learn a new way  of walking with You in recovery. AMEN
