Bringing Secrets Out Of The Darkness

Wednesday April 4, 2018

Sometimes, when it particularly suits us, we make excuses for not telling the truth.  Some people say things like “don’t ask, don’t tell” as a way to live in blind tolerance with what others are doing. However, we will make ourselves vulnerable to relapse if we tell ourselves, we’ll be fine in our recovery if we, “don’t ask, don’t tell” because we’re rejecting God’s instruction about being truthful.

Sometimes we have past events that we are not ready to deal with.  We choose to live with secrets simply because we haven’t been caught.  We convince ourselves that no one needs to know about certain things that have happened in our lives.

Regardless of the reason for our secrets, we are aware of the uneasiness within us.  We know what has been done to us.  We also know what we have done and project how we would feel if someone was to find out.

Jesus said:  People do not light a lamp and then hide it in a jar or put it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand. Then those who come in can see its light. What is hidden will be seen. And what is out of sight will be brought into the open and made known.  (Luke 8:16-17 NIRV)

God offers us a way out of our fear of exposure and humiliation.  Jesus said that if we acknowledge the truth, the truth will set us free.  It’s time to bring the hidden things of darkness to the light where they can be identified and healed or forgiven.

Therefore, since God in his mercy has given us this new way, we never give up.  We reject all shameful deeds and underhanded methods.  We don’t try to trick anyone or distort the word of God.  We tell the truth before God, and all who are honest know this.  (2 Corinthians 4:1-2 NLT)

God has given us a clear picture of what produces a good life and what causes harm.  If we continue to keep dark secrets in our heart, they will hinder our healing and impede our life with God in recovery.

Prayer:  Gracious God, Please give me the courage to reveal all my hidden secrets and receive Your forgiveness and healing. My desire is to faithfully walk with You in the light of Your presence.  Amen
